Indian InsTitute of Technology New Delhi

Public, autonomous institute of technology with 10,000+ students

Interesting Notes & Highlights:

  • IIT New Delhi is the large of the 23 IIT campuses; it also one of the original 5 campuses; 18 IITs have opened in the last 20 years

  • Second school we visited with a center for blind and low vision folks; in particular this center was engaged in research and product development

  • Incubator for product development that include business bootcamps and have supported 85+ start-ups

  • India is bidding for the 2036 Olympics - IIT Delhi is working as a partner in the bid

  • 26% of the students are women and 16% of the faculty are women

Jamia Millia Islamia

Public, central university with 10,000+ students enrolled in person and 24,000+ students enrolled online

Interesting Notes & Highlights:

  • Status as a Minority Educational Institutions as Muslim Minority Institution and can reserve up to 50% of seats for Muslim students

  • The Chief Vigilance Officer reports to the central (federal) government; accountability and resource management

  • 50% of student are women and majority of the academic deans are women

  • School offers education from nursery school to the doctorate level

  • Focus is on knowledge, rather than education

  • Many students are first learners (first generation to attend college) from villages who return to their homes with knowledge

Jindal Global University

Private, not for profit, trusted research university with 14,000+ students enrolled

Interesting Notes & Highlights:

  • O.P. Jindal was the founder of the Jindal Group, a conglomerate in steel, power, mining, and infrastructure

  • The university was founded by his grandson in 2006 with 100 students; the law school opened in 2009

  • Many faculty are from the United States, including 4 academic deans

  • The only PhD program in Higher Education in India (the degree I earned) and includes a higher ed research center

  • University houses a Constitution Museum

  • Community engagement is essential to education; students are frequently in communities

Ashoka University

Private, nonprofit research university with 2,900+ students

Interesting Notes & Highlights:

  • Modeled after American liberal arts education; all students and faculty live on campus

  • Founded 2014 with a business model including 220 donors

  • University reports that employers are responding very well to employees with a liberal arts education, though there was initial skepticism

  • Students don’t select majors until their third year

  • There is a commitment to the whole student

Janki Devi Memorial College

Public, women’s college under the University of Delhi with 4,000+ students enrolled

Interesting Notes & Highlights:

  • Founded by a Gandhian, Freedom Fighter (for Indian independence) in honor of his mother

  • Most students are first to attend college in their families

  • College has a vocational center, which helps to subsidize the costs of education

  • The second women’s college we attend, reaffirming the importance of women’s education

  • Students are service oriented, spending extensive time taking education out into various communities
